Galcantray dispersal hits 1700 gns

Prices reached 1700gns at Stirling on Saturday at United Auctions' annual collective sale of in-lamb ewes.

Top price was paid for a Suffolk ewe from David Walker, Galcantray. She was by Templand Cracker and in-lamb to Collessie Dead Lucky and sold to H Annett and Son, Widdrington.

Next top was 1100gns from the Strathmor dispersal from Gordon Taylor for a gimmer by Glenho Gurkha out of a Castlewellan North Star Dam in-lamb to Glenhead Golden Phoenix.

John Christie, West Carse, sold to 1000gns for a gimmer by Cairness Almighty The Second. She was in-lamb to Bankend Bill's Eye and sold to H Annett and son, Widdrington.

Also a major reduction from the Late John B Croal, Hollycroft reached 450gns for a two crop ewe by Orcades Highline in-lamb to Well Knight. She sold to Scott Enginering, Forfar.

Charolais females from Wendy Willox, Starthinver, sold to 350gns twice, averaging 350gns for six gimmers. Zwartbles females topped at 400gns for a gimmer from M A Simpson, Tardoes.

Ballymena & Dungannon female sales


Ballymena 1st November (89% clearance)

A Gault sold the highest price gimmer at 1,400gns bought by P Greaney. This Cairness Kanine gimmer was in lamb to Cairness New Approach. The Forkins flock sold 4 gimmers to average £945.

Dennis Taylor had the second highest price of 1,050gns paid by M Killilea. This Strathisla Lift T'The Stars gimmer was in lamb to Carragh Viagra. The Ballynacanon flock sold 9 in lamb gimmers to average £500.

The largest exhibitor was the Robinson family. The Benrafton flock won the champion female at the sale with a Strathisla Stoner Gimmer that went out unsold at 2,800gns. The remaining 27 lots were sold to a top of 1,000gns paid by A Patton and ended with an average of £460. Ewe pictured is KKW:L38 Lot 53

Dungannon 30th October (98.5% clearance)

7,200 gns was the top price paid by R Wilson (Strathisla) for an in lamb gimmer from Lakeview. This Strahisla Shadrach gimmer was in lamb to Lakeview Leeroy. W Borthwick paid 4,800gns for a Shannagh Shergar gimmer from the same pen. His purchase was in lamb to Strathisla Stoner.

The Burnview flock sold in lamb gimmers to a top of 1,700gns paid by R Walsh Garryhinch flock. This Castleisle Impact daughter was The second highest price of 1,300gns was paid by J Screene for a Baileys Invincible gimmer in lamb to Pankymoor Prelude.

Beeston tops at £3,600 from Roundacre

WITH ANOTHER FROM CAIRNESS AT 3100 GNS
The Ninth Annual Show & Sale of Pedigree Suffolk in‐lamb females and ewe lambs, sponsored by Farmers
David Inman who runs the Lindum flock based Nr. Melton Mowbray officiated as judge. The Clear overall show champion an execelent ewe lamb from David T Jones’ Drwsnant Flock ,She in by Thurston Calzaghe out of a ewe by the £30,000 Cairness Destiny and sold for 1450 gns
to MJ Cornish of Buckfastleigh, Devon
selected a ewe lamb sired by Thurston Calzaghe from David Jones of Ruthin, Denbighshire. Reserve Champion
was a one crop ewe sired Meikleson Impression from Ross Lawrence’s Roundacre Flock based at Nr.
Winkleigh, Devon whilst the Honourable Mention was the 1st prize gimmer, by Cairness Just The Best, from
Aberdeenshire based Cairness Flock of Mr. Jimmy Douglas.
Trade was tremendous, particularly for the in‐lamb ewes and gimmers, which was no doubt helped by the
good trade achieved for Suffolk tups this year and the fantastic crowd of buyers in attendance. Over sixty
buyers were recorded from Aberdeenshire to Cornwall as well as Belgium and Northern Ireland. In fact buyers
from 29 counties throughout mainland Britain purchased sheep with large numbers going into Wales, the
South West, the Midlands and throughout the Northern Counties as well as about six different buyers from
Scotland.



Top price of the day was achieved by Ross Lawrence with his Reserve Champion ewe who was scanned
carrying twins to this years’s Edinburgh Champion Cairness Kaos . This one crop ewe is out of a Strathisla bred
dam and after a flurry of bidding from many bidders she was eventually knocked down to Mr. & Mrs John
Gould for their Rychmae Flock at Buxton, Derbyshire. Ross had a tremendous day selling his ten entries for
the top flock average of the day of £1071 including two two crop ewes at 1400 gns and 1200 gns.
Jimmy Douglas of the Cairness Flock and this year he achieved the second highest average of £777.00 for his group of 21 sheep. His
top price was 3100 gns for the 1st prize gimmer and Honourable Mention of the Show. She was sold carrying
twins to the 2010 Sire of the Year and 20000 gns 2009 National Sale Champion, Cairness Achievement. She
was sold to James and Liam Scott for their Biffie Flock at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. The third and fourth
highest priced in‐lamb females also came from Cairness; a three crop ewe by Cairness Save the day sold for
2000 gns to Bill Troup of the Whitestone Flock at Sauchen, Aberdeenshire and another similar aged ewe by
Cragroe Craftsman sold for 1500 gns to Gary Beacom for his Lakeview Flock in Northern Ireland.
Ewe Lambs were harder to sell than the in‐lambers, but nevertheless some notable prices were achieved. The top price ewe lamb was 1700 gns for a daughter Morris Les
from John Sinnett’s Stockton Flock; she sold to JL Davies of Aberaeron, Ceredigion for his Frongoy Flock who
purchased another by the same sire for 1100 gns. Mike Davies & Sons of the Brecon based Safaddan Flock
purchased another Stockton ewe lamb by Morris Les for 1450 gns.

Carlisle Suffolks top at 1500gns for ewe lamb

Taking the top bid at Friday's sale of Suffolk females at Carlisle was Mark Evans' Jubilee flock with a January born ewe lamb by Strathbeg Stan the Man. This single born lamb is out of a dam by Strathisla Shirocco and goes back to homebred sire Jubilee Godfather.She is off to Northern Ireland as buying her was Norman Robinson.
Next best of 1020gns was also paid for one from Jubilee, this time a Strathisla St Nicholas sired ewe lamb. Also a single lamb this one is also out of a dam by Shirocco and goes back to Didcot Dominator. She was bought by James Nisbet, Mauchline, Ayrshire.

Mr Nisbet bought the next best priced lot too, paying 700gns for a shearling ewe from the Proctor family's Conveth flock. this one, in lamb to Cairness Achievement, is by Strathisla Schumacher and out of a dam by Cairness Save the Day. She goes back to Muiresk Video Star.

Then at 660gns was a shearling from the Northtyne flock of D M Robertson. Sired by Glenhead Infusion, she was sold in lamb to Northtyne Drifter and is out of a dam by Solwaybank Insignia. This one sold to T R and E A Milburn, Greenhead, Carlisle.

Following that at 650gns was one from Darren Jones. This 2007-born ewe is by Thurston Chieftain and out of a ewe by Cairness Spellbound. She sold in lamb to Cairness See the Stars and was bought by J A and M Gornall.

And then at 630gns was one from Lewis Harkness. This was a shearling ewe in lamb to Laurelbank First Flight and out of a dam by Deveronside Design. Buyer of this one was H MacFadzean, Dunscore.

Averages; 10 ewes £323.40, 36 shearling gimmers £418.54, 12 ewe lambs £493.50 (Harrison and Hetherington).

Manorhouse & Cravon dispersal

MANORHOUSE AND CRAVEN SUFFOLKS SELL TO 1200 GNS.
HUGE CROWD ATTEND SKIPTON
A massive crowd gathered at Skipton Auction Mart, North Yorkshire for the dispersal of the entire
Manorhouse and Craven Flocks of Pedigree Suffolk Sheep, the property of father and son team,
David and John Calvert of Southfield Farm, West Marton, Skipton who were selling their pedigree
sheep to enable the expansion of their commercial dairy herd.
Buyers travelled from all over the country as well as there being a good representation from the
home county. Numerically it was only a small sale totalling 66 Head, but nevertheless 33 different
names were recorded on the buyers list and there were many, many more bidders present who
were unsuccessful on the day. The sheep were distributed nationwide with buyers from the
following counties being successful Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, Carmarthenshire, Cheshire, Cornwall,
Cumbria, Devon, Dumfriesshire, Durham, Lancashire, London, Monmouthshire, Northampton,
Northumberland, Worcester, and Yorkshire.
With such a good crowd in excess of 250 people around the ring and the demand for Suffolks
experiencing a renaissance, add to that an old established (1976) flock of repute, trade was, not
surprisingly, hot.
The top price was 1200 gns for a one crop daughter of Safaddan Smartie carrying twins by Kings
Talent purchased by H Annett and Son of Morpeth, Northumberland who also purchased a similar
age ewe by the same sire for 900 gns. Another one crop ewe also by Smartie and carrying a single
to Westcarse Wallice sold for 950 gns to C Lowry, Rockfield, Monmouthshire. Two crop ewes sold to
780 gns for a daughter of Glenhead Grimaldi carrying twins to Kings Talent purchased by P
McFadzean of Dumfries while another by Manorhouse Solo sold for 750 gns to Geoff Riby of
Bridlington. Three crop ewes sold to 720 gns for a daughter of Birness Goldstorm selling to Mr.
Lowry whilst four crop ewes sold to 750 gns for a daughter of the 30000 gns Cairness Golden Star
selling to CR Emmett of Portscatho, Truro, Cornwall.
Gimmers sold to 720 gns for another Smartie daughter carrying thwins to Rhaeadr Rocket Star. She
was purchased N.Dalgarno of Tregony, Cornwall. The trade of the day was for the ewe lambs which
were a particularly good group and topped at 920 gns for a daughter of Craven Cracker selling to P
McFadzean. A Kings Talent daughter sold for 800 gns to JA & M Gornall of Clitheroe and a Craccker
daughter making 750 gns to Robert Percival of Carlisle.
The rams topped at 750 gns for the two year old Westcarse Wallice selling to S May of Barnstable,
Devon.

30 Flock Ewes £541.50; 16 Gimmers £488.25; 14 Ewe Lambs £553.50; 6 Tups £570.50.
